Questions and guidance

Frequently asked questions about your jewellery

Answers to common questions about commissioning a piece, arranging a private appointment and having jewellery or watches valued at Christopher’s Harrogate studio.

Starting a commission

What does bespoke jewellery mean?

Bespoke jewellery is designed from the beginning for one person and one purpose, rather than chosen from existing stock. With Christopher, the design, gemstones, metal and proportions are worked out with you, so the finished piece reflects the person it is for and the way it will be worn.

Do I need to have a finished design in mind?

No. Many commissions begin with a feeling, an occasion or a piece of jewellery someone already loves. Christopher’s role is to help you shape that starting point into a design. If you have sketches, photographs or a clear idea, bring them. If not, a conversation is enough to begin.

Will I work directly with Christopher?

Yes. You work personally with Christopher from the first conversation to the finished design. He listens to the brief, develops the design with you and guides the decisions on gemstones, metal and detail, so you are not passed between people while the piece takes shape.

Design, gemstones and diamonds

Do I need to know which diamond or gemstone I want?

No. Many people begin with only a sense of what feels right. Christopher will explain the differences between natural diamonds, laboratory-grown diamonds and coloured gemstones, show how each choice affects the look of the ring and help you decide with confidence rather than guesswork.

Can Christopher help me choose the gemstone and setting?

Yes. Choosing the gemstone and the setting together is a central part of the commission. Christopher talks you through shape, size, colour and how the setting holds and frames the gemstone, considering how the ring will be worn every day as well as how it looks.

Is the ring designed specifically for us?

Yes. Each engagement ring is designed for the person who will wear it, not adapted from a catalogue. The proportions, gemstone, metal and details are developed with you, so the finished ring reflects the two of you and the way it will be worn.

Budgets and timescales

How is my commission priced?

Every commission is individually quoted. Your budget helps guide the gemstones, scale, precious metal and design choices, with a clear quotation agreed before making begins.

How long will a commission take?

Timescales vary with the design, gemstone sourcing and complexity. If you have an important date in mind, mention it at the first conversation and begin as early as practical.

Valuations of existing jewellery and watches

How much does a valuation cost?

A single jewellery item is £95 + VAT. Each additional jewellery item assessed during the same appointment is £75 + VAT. A watch valuation is £125 + VAT. If you have several items, contact Christopher before booking so the appropriate appointment time can be arranged.

Can I have both jewellery and watches valued?

Yes. Christopher offers valuations for jewellery and for watches at the Harrogate studio. Mention what you would like valued when you book, so the appointment can be arranged around the items you are bringing.

Where do valuations take place?

Valuations take place at the studio in Windsor House, Cornwall Road, Harrogate. The studio is open by appointment, so please book before you visit. Same-day appointments are available, and you can book by telephone, email or WhatsApp.

How do I book a valuation?

Book a same-day appointment online through the Book a valuation link on this page, or call Christopher on 07940 295070, email chris@christopherstoner.com or send a message on WhatsApp. Let him know how many items you would like valued and whether they are jewellery, watches or both, and he will arrange an appointment at the Harrogate studio.

SmartReport and documentation

Will I still receive a valuation report?

Yes. Your valuation is presented through a detailed SmartReport, which you can access in ValuVault. It records the item, identifying information, photographs and valuation details in a digital-first format designed to be accessible and shareable.

What is the difference between SmartReport and ValuVault?

SmartReport is the detailed living record of the jewellery or watch. ValuVault is the secure place where you access and manage that record alongside relevant ownership documents.

Can the SmartReport be shared with an insurer?

The owner can share the SmartReport for relevant insurance conversations. It is designed to be insurer-ready, although individual insurers decide what information they require and whether they accept a valuation.

Is insurance included with the valuation?

No. Insurance is separate and optional. Through our partnership with ZNG Cover, eligible clients can be introduced to specialist jewellery and watch insurance, subject to ZNG Cover’s quotation, terms, eligibility and acceptance.

Appointments and location

Is the Harrogate studio appointment-only?

Yes. The studio at Windsor House, Cornwall Road, Harrogate, is open by appointment. Booking ahead means Christopher can set aside time to talk through your ideas without interruption. Get in touch by telephone, email or WhatsApp to arrange a visit.

Can I contact Christopher by phone or WhatsApp?

Yes. You can call Christopher on 07940 295070 or message him on WhatsApp on the same number. If you prefer to write, email chris@christopherstoner.com. Whichever you choose, you will be speaking with Christopher himself.

Care during ownership

Who should I contact about care for my piece?

Contact Christopher to discuss care, servicing or a later valuation. Keep relevant documents with your SmartReport in ValuVault so the record remains connected to your piece throughout ownership.

What shall we make?

You do not need a finished idea. A conversation is enough.
